Salli S. Swindell lives in Hudson, Ohio with her husband David and cat The Bun. Salli enjoys daily power walks, podcasts, vegan cooking, and drawing with friends, also known as Snack + Sketch.

Experience

Salli has over 40 years of experience as an illustrator, specializing in greeting cards. Salli began her career as a line designer for ten years at American Greetings, before she became a full-time freelance art director and illustrator.

Expertise & Authority

Salli has illustrated over 4,000 greeting cards for clients such as American Greeting, Design Design, and Design House Greetings. Eight of her greeting cards have been nominated for a Louie Award and three have won!

Salli is the co-founder—along with her brother Nate Padavick—of three illustration platforms: THEY DRAW is the Internet's largest collection of food, travel and garden illustrations from artists all around the world; The Illustrator’s Circle is a creative playground where illustration lovers are drawn together to exercise their imaginations; and, Illustrators For Hire is a directory that promotes a curated selection of freelance illustrators.

Illustration Inspiration

One little fig was all it took for Salli to realize how much she loves illustrating food. She also likes adding her wonky handlettering to her illustrations and experimenting with different letter forms. Throughout the day, Salli moves back and forth from the kitchen counter to her studio which is only ten steps away.

Creative Lifestyle

Salli is a vegan. She cuts lots of veggies every day. She loves coffee, even de-caf. Salli can never pick a favorite color. She talks to cats. She starts and ends her day sketching and Salli is grateful for all of it.

Creative Process

Salli’s creative process begins with thoughtful conversations to gather ideas and define the scope of work. From there, she collaborates with clients through a series of stages—sketching, revising, partially illustrating, refining, and tweaking—until the final artwork is complete and truly reflects her client’s vision.
